NTPC Ltd. is the largest power utility of India owning and operating one fifth of the country's installed capacity and generates about one fourth of the country's generation. NTPC owns and operates number of coal-based power stations and gas/liquid fuel based power stations spread across the country. NTPC has also diversified into Hydro Sector and is presently setting up a Hydro Power Plant at Koldam (Himachal Pradesh). In a 'Global Utility Benchmarking Survey', Data monitor, UK ranks NTPC as the sixth largest thermal power generator and second most efficient in capacity utilization. As per the survey of Asia week of the top 1000 large companies of the Asia-Pacific region, NTPC ranks 295th in terms of sales.
NTPC is planning to add over 20,000 MW of new capacity by the year 2012. NTPC has associations with most of the global energy majors. Starting off as a Licensee for Power Distribution in the suburbs of Mumbai, BSES has also taken over Distribution in Orissa and Delhi. REL took over BSES in the year 2002. REL has the distinction of operating distribution networks with a high level of online reliability. The Company is a pioneer in the area of Electrical and Mechanical erections in various thermal, gas and hydro power plants. With more than 70 years of rich and enabling experience in the power sector, and more than 30 years of experience in turnkey erection and commissioning of projects, REL has contributed 4,500 MW of capacity for various clients, both inside and outside the nation.
REL has already stepped into generation, by setting up its own thermal power plant of 500 MW at Dahanu, Maharashtra, in record time. REL has also commissioned 200 MW CCPP at Samalkot, Andhra Pradesh, India. REL has also set up 165 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant at Ernakulam in Kerala.
